Foreword By: Stewart B Rosenberg

Cover art for Transformational Discovery book This book is an inspiring journey through the life and contributions of the Brazilian physicist and space scientist Claudio Oliveira Egalon. With an unwavering passion for science and invention, Egalon shares his journey from his early experiences as a child in São Paulo to his revolutionary advancements in the field of fiber optics and technological innovation. Graduated in Physics from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, UFRJ) in 1984, Dr. Egalon sought to deepen his knowledge in the United States, where he graduated with a Master and Ph.D. degrees in Physics from the College of William & Mary, and subsequently, a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Old Dominion University. His remarkable career at NASA includes nine years as a researcher at NASA Langley Research Center, where he conducted pioneering experiments in Side-Illuminated Fiber Optic, SIFO, sensors. Between 1993 and 1994, he flew six times on NASA’s KC-135 aircraft, the same airplane that was used to train NASA astronauts, at least 13 years before the first Brazilian astronaut, Marcos Pontes. This experience almost led him to become the first Brazilian astronaut.

This book is structured in several different volumes, organized chronologically to portray the main periods and experiences of Claudio Egalon’s personal and professional trajectory. The first volume, which the reader has in hand, explores Claudio’s childhood, adolescence and youth, covering his first experiences in adult life, with special emphasis on the phase in which he worked as a researcher at NASA. This volume also addresses both the dreams and discoveries that shaped his childhood and adolescence as well as the challenges and lessons arising from his first scientific and technological achievements on American soil.

Follow up volumes will address his life after NASA first covering his stint at Intelligent Optical Systems (IOS), a small technology business in Torrance, California. Highlighting the experience he acquired at IOS, which was marked by significant advancements in his technology, we draw important lessons on the dynamics of technological innovation in a highly competitive environment. These are followed by reflections on the impact of the private sector on Claudio’s training as a scientist, emphasizing how this experience was crucial for his subsequent transition as an independent entrepreneur.

These volumes report about the periods in which Claudio obtained projects funded by important research and innovation institutions, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in the US, and FAPESP and FINEP in Brazil. The narrative delves into the development of technologies patented by Claudio, exploring what happens behind the scenes in the research environment, the international patenting process and the challenges faced to transform innovative ideas into practical and viable solutions.

The author shares his most recent experiences, philosophical reflections on various topics related to science and society, all providing the reader with a comprehensive and in-depth view of his thought process, inspirations and worldview. Egalon also reveals the struggles for recognition of his innovations, the challenges of commercialization and the lessons drawn from both failure and success.

Another key aspect of this journey was the valuable partnership established with Stewart B. Rosenberg, President of Bio-Investigations Ltd. The collaboration between Claudio and Stewart, which began in 2021, is proving to be crucial in the advancement and commercialization of the technology developed by Claudio – i.e., Side-Illuminated Fiber Optics, or SIFOTM, sensors. This partnership, marked by deep mutual respect, trust and the constant sharing of ideas, has strengthened both the technological and business projects and has also established a rare and positive friendship, contributing significantly to the global expansion of the innovations presented in this work.

Blending themes such as Physics, Chemistry, Optics, Astronomy, Technology, and Electrical Engineering, this work offers an accessible view for both specialists and laypeople alike, inspiring creativity and the pursuit of innovative solutions. The author shares his experience with science fiction, and inspirations from icons such as Gerry Anderson, Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury and others, providing reflections on scientific curiosity and skepticism.

More than an autobiography, this book is an invitation to reflect on the complexity of innovation and the role of science in the future. By sharing his personal memories, profound reflections, and the obstacles that were overcome as a scientist, entrepreneur, and dreamer, Egalon invites us to reflect on the incessant pursuit of transforming ideas into reality.
